There are a lot of different problems that a water damage disaster can cause in your home. Here are five of the destructive that our water damage restoration experts at UltraClean in Nampa commonly encounter.
Black water is as bad as it gets when it comes to contaminated water. In simple terms, black water is floodwater that contains sewage and/or harsh chemicals. It’s possible to remediate a home with black water contamination, but it’s the most difficult to recover from. You’ll likely lose all your furnishings and may need to replace much of your home’s structural components. Contracting tetanus is a real possibility when cleaning up black water, so extreme caution should be exercised around black water.
Water and electricity do not mix well. Thus, a flood in your home poses a serious threat to your home’s electrical systems. The first thing you should do to avoid this is turn off your electricity as soon as possible after the flood. This will prevent the threat of electrocution and make it safer to be in the home. Additionally, you should do all you can to keep the floodwater from reaching your outlets and other electrical implements since once this happens that damage can be irreversible.
Similar advice applies for your gas lines as it does for your electrical systems. Shut the gas off in your home as soon as you can to prevent gas leaks and even a possible explosion. Know that installing new gas lines may be necessary but the likelihood of this drops for every bit of additional floodwater you are able to keep out of your home.
While mold is important for breaking down dead things in nature, it’s the last thing you want in your home. After a water damage, it takes just 24 to 48 hours for mold to start growing on water-logged items. This can include everything from clothing and toys to carpet and drywall. Mold has even more far-reaching consequences than just damaging your home and the belongings in it. It could even be toxic to your health, causing breathing problems and allergic reactions in sensitive individuals, this is why water damage restoration needs to happen immediately.
It’s one thing to have the structure of your home damaged in a flood. It’s another to lose your prized furniture and possessions to the disaster. While you may not be able to save everything, you should prioritize your most porous possessions first after a flood since they are the most likely to be ruined.
